Lucerne Highlights

Lucerne is situated in the central part of Switzerland on the shores of Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) and surrounded by picturesque mountains, including Mount Pilatus and Rigi.

Lucerne has a rich history dating back to the medieval times. This is evident from its well-preserved medieval architecture and charming old town. The city was established in the 8th century and became an important trading hub during the Middle Ages. Its strategic location on the Gotthard Pass route brought it economic prosperity and cultural exchange.

  • The Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), built in the 14th century, is one of Lucerne’s attractions. It is a covered wooden bridge with a tower and features paintings depicting Lucerne’s history.
  • Outdoors: Lake Lucerne offers boating and other water sports. The nearby mountains provide opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, skiing, and snowboarding. Mount Pilatus, accessible by a cogwheel railway or cable car, offers wonderful views.
  • Lucerne is culturally active as it hosts the Lucerne Festival, one of the world’s leading classical music festivals. It also has several museums, art galleries, and theaters.
